How Long Does Polyurethane Need To Air Out?

How long does polyurethane need to air out? The answer: Probably a lot less time than you think! Generally speaking, it’s recommended that a building remain empty for eight to 24 hours after insulation installation.

The Foam Insulation Process

We produce polyurethane foam and apply our spray insulation by combining two liquid components into the area to be insulated. The foam then expands, filling the void, and creating a super-air-tight barrier.

During the process, there are absolutely no blowing agents (such as chlorofluorocarbons or hydrochlorofluorocarbons). Our products are light-density; while installation will create some “off-gassing” and requires ventilation, the foam itself cures (i.e., sets) literally within a few seconds. After that, it no longer produces off-gassing.

We always make sure to provide the safest work environment, opening windows, if necessary, and allowing enough cure time to prevent any mishaps. We also maintain a good airflow so that fresh air is able to enter the business during installation. And of course, our installers always wear protective gear.

Types of Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation comes in two forms: open-cell and closed-cell.

Open-cell foam insulation is denser and feels almost sponge-like. Closed-cell foam insulation offers a higher insulating value and provides a good air and vapor barrier.

Which one you choose depends on your particular circumstances. But both have excellent R-values, which is a measure of resistance to heat flow. Open-cell products feature R-values in the 3.75-inch to 4-inch range. R-values for closed-cell foam insulation are in the 6.7-inch to 7-inch range.
