A Nightmare Spray Foam Project with "Poison Air"
A recent article was posted about Spray Foam being your biggest nightmare! You can read about it HERE
But Wait... Can Spray Foam Really Poison My Homes Air?
It feels like every few years an article or issue like this rears it’s head, and we’ve dealt with similar situations here in the PNW. It’s frustrating to see an entire industry getting bad publicity due to bad contractors! When you read this article it can make spray foam sound like a horrific product, and it can be if it’s not installed properly. Choose your contractor very carefully! The plumbing and electrical systems in your house could be even worse then bad foam if you have an unskilled or ‘bad’ contractor doing the work. The dangers of these systems led to forming regulations to ensure that anyone advertising themselves as an ‘Electrician’ and/or working on your electrical system was a licensed professional. The licensed trades require documented supervised training on the job, schooling, and testing before a license is granted. Insulating has traditionally been an open trade.
What is a Qualified Spray Foam Contractor
If you decided you wanted to become a spray foam insulation contractor today, you could purchase a foam rig and get a contractors license and be up and running! That is a scary thought! We work all of our employees through a regimented training program, send them to classes industry classes and trainings so they can fully understand what they are doing. They are manufacturing a polyurethane foam in place everyday, they need to manage the ratio, multiple temperatures, moisture levels, pressures and other factors to consistently make this happen. As technology gets better every year this process becomes easier, but it is still a highly skilled craft. Our people work there way up through getting SPFA certified, which is an industry organization dedicated to Spray Foam. It’s similar to getting a license in a trade like plumbing or electrical. The downside is that this certification is only required on certain federally funded projects, so many contractors opt not to do this. They can reap larger profits by keeping there costs down, and when they have an issue they fold up shop and can jump off to the next state and start over! We would love to see each state put regulations in place to protect the consumer and the industry. We’ve been here for over 50 years, and we’ve see this cycle happening. Someone sets up shop, starts spraying foam on the cheap. Some time goes by and they have some failures due to lack of training/understanding and they close up shop.
Vet Your Spray Foam Contractor!
Please vet your contractor thoroughly and make sure they have properly trained technicians, just because someone is advertising they do foam doesn’t mean they have the correct training to do so!
